I came across a linocut I made in high school!? Yup, I had still had some art I made in high school and no I’m not sayin’ when that was. But I remembered how much I loved making that piece. And it wasn’t the final product, it was the planning and more so the carving. There is something calming about carving a piece of linoleum. Linoleum has a smell and it makes a sound when you carve it. Then you have all these cool gray pieces of carved material all over the place. The entire process is pretty awesome. And the whole reverse thing is pretty cool.

So I revisited that process and I am thrilled with the results. The above were quick pieces but what I love about them is their primitive, rustic look. I love that you can see where I didn’t get the background completely carved away. I love black and white. I love that I didn’t get complete ink coverage. So much I love and so many ideas.

The thing about making art, for me anyway, is that it’s way more than following through on an idea. It involves all of the senses, sometimes without realizing it. That’s the great thing about making art it is a complete experience, it involves so much of you. As an artist you really do put your heart and soul in your work.

I’m thinking about making a Christmas cut for cards, maybe add some hand painted details, perhaps some glitter. What do you think?
